PLAYERAPPEAREDR64R32R16QFSFFW The French Open will begin on Sunday without Roger Federer, the first time he will miss the tournament since 1998. It’s also the first time the 17-time major champion will miss any Grand Slam since the 1999 U.S. Open. Federer’s withdrawal breaks his record-setting streak of 65 straight Grand Slam appearances, a stretch that encompasses fully one-third of the history of Open-era men’s tennis. When Federer last missed a Slam, two Americans, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, were ranked Nos. 1 and 2 in the world. Federer had just turned 18, was mired in a slump, and was ranked so low that he needed to try to qualify for the tournament. He lost in the second round of qualifying. This time, Federer is ranked No. 3 in the world but has struggled all year with injuries, entering just four events. Federer said in a statement that he withdrew to “ensure I could play the remainder of the season and help to extend the rest of my career. I remain as motivated and excited as ever.”No. 1 Novak Djokovic has never missed a major since he played his first in 2005. The French Open will be his 46th in a row. His consistency rivals Federer’s and exceeds that of the other three men — Björn Borg, John McEnroe and Rafael Nadal — who achieved the five highest Elo scores of the Open era, our measure of the players who peaked at the highest levels of all time. Djokovic, though, is riding streaks of five consecutive finals, eight semis and 27 quarterfinals. Federer’s withdrawal will make it easier for Djokovic to maintain his streaks — not so much because a weakened Federer isn’t in the draw, but because it bumps Nadal up to fourth in the seedings, preventing the possibility that Djokovic would have to face his top clay-court rival before the semifinals. Injuries have kept Nadal from stringing together long streaks at Slams, while Borg and McEnroe rarely bothered to make the trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open. CORRECTION (May 19, 3:50 p.m.): The headline on a previous version of this article gave an incorrect time period since Federer’s last missed Grand Slam. It was 17 years, not 18 years. read more

Dwight Howard Missed Dunk Got Booed By Clippers Fans

Clippers fans booed Dwight Howard Monday night after he missed an easy dunk in his first game back in L.A. since he abandoned the Lakers for the Houston Rockets. Not only was Howard booed during the pregame show, he also got negative cheers every time he touched the ball early in the game. Howard was able to get some applause from the crowd, but maybe not the kind he wanted. In the first quarter, he got the ball low in the paint to throw down a monster jam on Clippers DeAndre Jordan, but missed the point blank shot, throwing the ball into the front row instead.  The crown wasted no time filling the arena with cheers at Howard’s expense.Howard left L.A. with $30 million on the table to sign a 5-year $88 million free agent deal with Houston. He did gain about $50 million to line his pockets, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he has no fans in Los Angeles. The Rockets didn’t have an answer defensively all night for the Clippers who won 137-118, handing Houston their first loss of the season. read more

Theres Income Inequality in Golf Too

September 28, 2019

| kpatfjklhxss

But those are team sports. With the Masters tournament unspooling this week, I started wondering about income inequality for the PGA Tour, a collection of athletes that doesn’t have a salary cap. Surely, after more than a decade of big purses for Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and a select few others, golf would prove to be an unequal sport. It is, but increasingly less so. Since 1980, the PGA Tour has been shifting toward more income equality. How that happened, and how golf differs from other professional sports, shows that high levels of income inequality aren’t inevitable, even when individual athletes have different levels of skill. In 1980 the PGA Tour had a Gini coefficient of 0.70, which put it well above the major U.S. team sports. But last year the coefficient dropped to 0.58 (calculated using this tool). That holds, but to a lesser extent, if we look just at the top 100 money winners — in 2013 the tour’s Gini coefficient was 0.32, down from 0.36 in 1980.The move toward equality has happened despite huge amounts of cash injected into the game. In 2013, 82 golfers each won more than $1 million. Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, told ESPN this week, “I remember when I was an amateur and I won my first tournament in Tucson in 1991, the entire purse was $1 million, first place was $180,000 and Steve [Loy, my agent] and I would sit down and say, ‘I wonder if in my lifetime, probably not in my career, we would have play for a $1 million first-place check.’ [Now] it’s every week. It’s unbelievable, the growth of this game.”Since 1980, prize winnings on the PGA tour have increased from $35 million (in 2014 dollars) to $250 million. But the top 1 percent is still winning the same proportion of that money as in the past, even when the number of money winners on the tour fluctuates (from a high of 374 in 1996 to a low of 248 in 2002 and 2010). Using data provided by the PGA Tour, we can see how different tiers of golfers have split up the pot.The top 1 percent have seen relative stability in their share of winnings since 1980. In contrast, the share of winnings of the top 10 percent and top 25 percent of earners on the PGA Tour has fallen somewhat. The top 10 percent of earners took home about half of all the prize money in 1980, but less than 40 percent by 2013. Same for the top 25 percent: In 1980 that group took home about 80 percent of all available prize money, but only 65 percent by 2013.The distribution of winnings across the PGA tour has flattened out a bit, meaning that players on the bottom half of the winnings table are doing relatively better than they did a few golfing generations ago. The proportion of winnings taken home by those in the 25th to 50th percentile of golfers increased by 140 percent from 1980 to 2013. The bottom half of earners saw an even larger gain of 240 percent. A massive increase in overall income doesn’t disproportionately reward those at the top of the scale.Probably the closest analog to golf is tennis, an individual sport with a collection of players who belong to a tour and make money based on tournament performance. A 2012 analysis of the top-100 ranked tennis players on the ATP (men’s) and WTA (women’s) tours by Ryan Rodenberg, an assistant professor of sports law analytics at Florida State University, found a Gini coefficient of 0.44 for the men and 0.48 for the women. Since 1990, the women’s tour has had greater income inequality than the men’s tour, but in recent years the gap has closed considerably, with the men’s Gini coefficient rising by 0.11 points, likely due in part to the overwhelming dominance of a small number of male players. From 2007 to 2011, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer took home between 20 percent and 26 percent of all ATP World Tour winnings. In response to concern from players, both tennis tours have dramatically increased the amount of tournament winnings paid out to early-round losers. Wimbledon, for instance, increased the purse awarded to losers in the first three rounds by 90 percent over the past two years.Even in these comparatively simple settings — mini-economies if you will — there can be a very large range of outcomes on inequality. Looking at golf alone might be misleading. Looking across sports tells us that high levels of inequality aren’t inevitable. Earlier this year, several analysts at the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective took a look at income inequality in the major U.S. sports leagues. Using Gini coefficients, an economic tool that distills the degree of inequality among a set of earners to a single number, the collective found the NHL to be the most equitable and MLB to be the least. The researchers found that salary caps help limit income inequality, essentially. The results are below. A Gini coefficient of 0.0 means that every player has the same income — perfect equality — and a Gini coefficient of 1.0 means that one player takes home all of the income — perfect inequality.NHL: 0.42NBA: 0.52MLS: 0.54NFL: 0.57MLB: 0.621For comparison, according to the OECD (after taxes and transfers), in 2010 the United States had a Gini coefficient of 0.38, Sweden 0.27 and Mexico 0.47. read more

What Have The Knicks Done

| zzloezgnpkat

natesilver: I’m just saying that if you clear the decks for two max free agents but you have a guy like Siakam making just $2.5 million a year, that gives you a lot more to work with.chris.herring: Notice how smart we perceive those particular franchises to be. I saw someone say, “The smart franchises are circling the dumb one.” Almost like the Knicks were the prey here.tchow: Right?? I keep thinking there must be other, better trades.chris.herring: For sure. At least with Siakam, you have a good, athletic two-way player to build around.tchow: This is all just us talking, right? There were no reports that Toronto was even looking to offer Siakam. Right? Right?chris.herring: I honestly don’t know whether Smith will be a starter two or three years from now. There’s some faith because of how young he is, but he hasn’t shown consistency yet. And the Knicks haven’t been great with developing two-way talent at the guard spot lately.natesilver: I wanna know about the draft pick(s) too. Dallas still owns its own pick if it’s 1-5 this year — otherwise it goes to Atlanta — and they’re probably still going to end up in the lottery.neil: I think we are being very NYC-centric here and focusing on the Knicks’ angle. But for the Mavs, their new Doncic-Porzingis combo seems like it could eventually be very scary.natesilver: NYC IS BASKETBALL MECCA, NEIL! SUCH A MECCA THAT THE ONLY GOOD PLAYER ON THE KNICKS IN THE PAST 10 YEARS GETS TRADED FOR CAP SPACEneil: No, it’s not (“The Decline Of New York City As An NBA Talent Generator”).tchow: No, Neil’s right. Forget the Knicks. I already have. Porzingis and Luka together is going to be amazing!! No way Dirk retires now.chris.herring: Dallas is gonna be fun.natesilver: Yeah, how did they do that? Turn the No. 5 pick and — Dennis Smith Jr.? — into Luka and Porzingis?chris.herring: The Knicks were spending all this time trying to find a running mate for KP, and now Porzingis has Doncic.tchow: So right now, we have them projected to be way out of the playoffs. When is Porzingis supposed to return? I’m getting ahead of myselfchris.herring: They’re relevant now. Even if they unloaded a hefty part of their rotation here to get Porzingis. But this was a great move for them.natesilver: It was a little bit ambiguous. Dallas is tanking, obviously, so maybe they just play him for like six games to show he still had something left (as an inducement to free agents, etc.) and then find some excuse to shut him down.chris.herring: Yeah. Porzingis probably wasn’t going to play for NYK this year. Maybe he gets into a few games for Dallas, but I doubt it.natesilver: Yeah, they might as well tank too. Maybe not an outright tank, but they do keep their own pick if it’s 1-5.chris.herring: If you’re the Mavs, this makes sense. You’ve still got Harrison Barnes under contract making a lot of money. Hardaway is under contract a couple more years.tchow: “Makes sense” is such an understatement here.natesilver: Don’t the Mavs have space for a max free agent too?chris.herring: I don’t think so? Not with all the money they just took on. natesilver: Oh shit!!!!!tchow: Look at that. That’s a “we’re going to be teammates” handshake.natesilver: THE FIX WAS IN.chris.herring: I soooo hope the Knicks — who could’ve drafted Smith but instead took Frank Ntilikina — weren’t enamored by his good game to where they said, “You know what? That sounds good to us.”tchow: Chris, that is EXACTLY what happened.chris.herring: What it all comes down to for the Knicks is free agency: If you land two guys who are truly worth it, it’s hard to look back at this and be angry.tchow: And there is my silver lining.chris.herring: But for the time being, it is just astounding.natesilver: The Knicks also haven’t drafted very well. Kevin Knox is regarded as a future rotation piece, if not a star, and I sorta get why because he looks like a good player, but his numbers are unbelievably terrible.chris.herring: Also: My favorite stat ever, from my Knick beat days: The Knicks haven’t re-signed one of their draft picks on a multiyear deal since Charlie Ward, who they took in 1994. Trading Porzingis keeps that alive.natesilver: Wow. BASKETBALL MECCA.tchow: That is insane.chris.herring: So them wanting to build it through free agency is fitting.natesilver: I think I have to go to their next home game just to see what a shitshow it is.tchow: FiveThirtyEight field trip, Nate?natesilver: I’m down, dude. At least tickets will be cheap.tchow: Hey, at least we still have Allonzo Trier. And Enes Kanter is back. Things are looking up for the Knicks.chris.herring: Not that it has any bearing on how this summer pans out. But I think their last four deals for $90 million or more were, in this order: Melo, Amar’e Stoudemire, Stephon Marbury and Allan Houston.natesilver: I mean, just look at this shit: In response, FiveThirtyEight’s biggest NBA fans gathered to process the reported trade.chris.herring (Chris Herring, senior sportswriter): I covered the Knicks for five years. Not their worst five, necessarily. But saw their worst season in franchise history. You’re naturally going to see them do things that make you scream, “Why?!” But this is a new level, even for me.This Porzingis trade, if they don’t land a max-level star or two, is just befuddling.tchow (Tony Chow, video producer/angry Knicks fan): I think I’m going to be a Brooklyn Nets fan now. Why the hell would you do this?natesilver (Nate Silver, editor in chief): Do we know what draft pick compensation they got, if any? Because that seems pretty important. (These details, which weren’t clear during the time of the chat, emerged shortly after we finished the conversation. New York will receive two future first-round picks in the trade.)chris.herring: Not the exact terms, no. Though it seems really likely that the Mavs are going to give up something on that front.natesilver: I guess I’d say this: The process by which the Knicks got to this point is crazy. The outcome, I think, might not be as bad as it seems at first glance. But it really depends on the pick(s).chris.herring: More than anything, this was about allowing the Knicks to send over their bloated contracts so that they could clear salary cap space. Especially Tim Hardaway Jr., whose deal would’ve made it tough for them to add a second star next to Porzingis this summer.neil (Neil Paine, senior sportswriter): Yeah, if there is a silver lining (Is there a silver lining?), they just freed up a massive amount of cap space. tchow: tchow: Welcome to New York, Kevin Durant!!chris.herring: Only spent seven or eight years there, but this is where my New York cynicism comes into play. The Knicks haven’t had a very good history when it comes to FAs.natesilver: They also got a buy-low guy in Dennis Smith Jr., although it seems like they have about 14 other buy-low point guards on the roster right now.tchow: But in losing Porzingis, doesn’t that make the Knicks a less attractive destination to come play? If you were a max player, why would you look at this team and say, “I want to go to there”?natesilver: Well, yeah, that’s the catch.tchow: I guess maybe two max players could buddy up and that nullifies what I just said.natesilver: A team of Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and … uuuhhhh, who’s the third-best player on that team? Smith Jr., I guess?tchow: I don’t know what I’m saying anymore. This is INSANE!!! I’m still in shock.chris.herring: If nothing else, I guess this all just surprises me because it speaks to one of two things. Either 1) You have that much confidence that a superstar is coming …tchow: Well you’re forgetting Zion, Nate.chris.herring: Or 2) Things had gotten so bad/toxic with Porzingis that you didn’t see how you could make it work with him anymore. They really had no obligation to give into this right now, even if he was unhappy.neil: Right, he was only a restricted free agent after the season.tchow: Well, Chris, if things have gotten that bad with Porzingis, you would think they were secretly shopping him around earlier. Is this really the best deal they could get? I find that hard to believe.natesilver: It is worth keeping in mind that Porzingis has a serious injury that other guys have struggled to recover from, that he hadn’t reached superstar status yet, and that he was about to get expensive. The upside is so high, though, that you’d think a team, maybe a cap-constrained team, might have given up a little more.chris.herring: Yep. I’m not blown away by the fact that they dealt him. It’s what they dealt him for.natesilver: Getting technical, but his cap hold is only like $12 million this summer, so that was a big benefit too.chris.herring: There are two or three different reasons to potentially deal him. I just don’t know that any of them were worth dealing him for that return.natesilver: This trade was their free agency, in a way. Dallas very quietly just hit us with a Nash/Dirk redux. Except Luka can score better than Nash, and Porzingis can defend.natesilver: It looks like they should have cap space in 2020-21, though, when the Barnes/Powell contracts all come off the books.chris.herring: Two or three years from now, they’ll have cap money again, and you imagine players would want to team up with a duo like that.tchow: (if Porzingis signs)chris.herring: Porzingis will be 25 in two years. Luka will be 22. Also, can we talk about the fact that the Mavs were at the Garden last night? And Mark Cuban was there. I imagine this topic came up.natesilver: Ahhh didn’t think about that. But, yeah, it seems pretty weird to think this deal was just conjured up out of thin air.tchow: They knew. They fucking knew.chris.herring: Dennis Smith Jr. logged a triple-double.natesilver: Haha.tchow: tchow: My god that is … depressing.natesilver: I guess their bigs have been OK? Noah Vonleh and Luke Kornet and Mitchell Robinson?neil: Ooof, you were not kidding about Knox’s numbers, Nate.natesilver: Yeah, Neil, and it’s not just some advanced stats thing. He’s shooting just 37 percent. Just 4.2 rebounds, 0.9 assists, 0.6 steals and 0.3 blocks per game. For a guy who’s pretty athletic, that’s kind of sad.neil: Maybe he’s on the Enes Kanter diet.natesilver: Knox has a nice-looking 3-point stroke, and I guess you can say he’d get the numbers up if they weren’t tanking. That’s what’s a little hard to figure out on a team like the Knicks where they basically don’t have any incentive to work in their shot selection or to play defense.tchow: If this is just going to become a shitting on Knox chat, I think it’s time to end it.natesilver: I’m happy to also shit on other Knicks.tchow: Just for fun, to end this chat, should we all say who we think won this trade?chris.herring: Assuming the Knicks don’t land two absolute studs in FA, the Mavs.natesilver: It’s clearly a good trade for Dallas. Where it ends up on the spectrum from “terrible” to “OK” for the Knicks depends on the draft picks and, yeah, the free agent situation.chris.herring: Agreed, Nate. You just paired two of the best 25-and-under players in the league together. It could turn out to be a home run for both sides. I just don’t have that level of faith that everything will go right for New York.natesilver: There is a downside risk with Porzingis, too, which is that he’s never really healthy again. But you do have a year to evaluate him before making a commitment. So the fact that he’s not looking to sign a long-term extension right away is both a bug and a feature.chris.herring: I guess.neil: And given the lengths we’ve seen teams go to just to have a chance to get a franchise-altering star, it seems worth it.chris.herring: I’d be OK with that gamble if it means giving up DSJ and a pick. Dallas has always been willing to roll the dice on acquiring a star.tchow: You know who won? NBA Twitter won cause this is going to provide so much content for the next few days/until Anthony Davis gets traded.chris.herring: They even traded Tyson Chandler the summer after he was the linchpin to their title because they thought it’d allow them a chance at a star. They wanted to clear space.neil: The NBA needs to push its trade deadline further from the Super Bowl.Wait your turn, NBA! You’ll have the limelight next week.chris.herring: NOPE. In fact, I hope Bryce Harper and Manny Machado sign today, too.micah (Micah Cohen, managing editor): My two cents: I lost because I’m waiting for Nate to file a piece about independent presidential campaigns and the Porzingis trade has, I’m sure, delayed it.Check out our latest NBA predictions. New York Knicks executives in recent years have said they would rebuild cautiously and avoid trading their first-round picks. That approach paid off — sweet-shooting big man Kristaps Porzingis, the Knicks’ first-round pick in 2015, quickly ascended into a star, giving the team hope that it could finally build something sustainable with just another solid move or two. All the organization needed to do was avoid somehow taking a step backward. And then Thursday happened. FIGHT!!natesilver: No those don’t contradict. Sign the qualifying offer for one year. Then become a full-fledged free agent in summer 2020.tchow: Oh damn … you’re right. OK … back to crying.chris.herring: During the time I spent on the Knicks beat, I got used to watching them attach useful players to ones whose contracts were albatrosses. They traded Tyson Chandler (useful) to unload Raymond Felton (albatross). And Iman Shumpert (useful) to unload JR Smith (albatross).natesilver: Were Hardaway and Lee that untradeable? They aren’t terrible players, and their contracts aren’t that bad.chris.herring: Neither is a bad player. Maybe overpaid (I’ve definitely argued that with Hardaway).natesilver: In some sense, everyone in the deal is a distressed asset.chris.herring: If anything, Hardaway is just pricey because of what you want to accomplish this summer.tchow: Watch Dennis Smith Jr. come out of this as the best player in the trade.natesilver: It’s not nothing.chris.herring: But Porzingis should not be the sweetener in any deal like this! He’s the lone All-Star changing hands here.neil: Smith Jr. certainly got a lot of hype as a rookie last year.tchow: KP 👏 IS 👏 A 👏 UNICORNchris.herring: I’ll put it this way: Smith and his folks floated that he potentially wanted out of Dallas a week or two ago. That came and went, likely because no one felt like he was worth all that much. He’s explosive. He’s young enough to gamble something on. But he’s not even a clear starter in everyone’s eyes.natesilver: So what else could they have gotten? What do we think the market price for Porzingis would be? Would Toronto have given up Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, for instance, and taken on either Hardaway or Lee but not both?chris.herring: It was only 20 minutes or so before the trade reports came that this tweet went out. read more

Commentary Sports provide hope comfort unity to nation in wake of terrorist

| buomnwtzfefq

I love sports, and I always have. They have been there for me through the good and bad. No matter what, I could count on turning on ESPN or ABC and wasting hours. Even at our lowest, they give us hope. Sept. 11, 2001, was no exception. The terrorist attacks halted the nation. Many were gripped with fear and uncertainty. The healing needed to start somewhere. For many, it was on the field. I will never forget what I saw when play resumed. Whether it was on the collegiate or professional level, the stadiums and arenas brought about comfort for many. Players greeted New York police officers, firemen and military personnel. Teams wore flags on uniforms; there were flyovers at stadiums and tears in the eyes of all. It seemed almost like the coaches and athletes said to those affected, “You are doing all that you can; now let us do what we can.” The New York Yankees went to the World Series, and many rooted for them. Even those of us who hate the Yankees wanted to see New York rebound in the best way. Even so, the Yankees lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks. The New England Patriots won the Super Bowl in January, but we are not going into all the conspiracy theories because that would take too long. We cannot forget the halftime show, with the names of those who died in the attacks cascading down a large banner while U2 performed. A flag that was at Ground Zero was even brought out for the national anthem. Fast-forward to now. With the NFL lockout drama, the possibility of a lockout in the NBA and the Ohio State scandal, sports fans think all is hopeless. Then, the Sunday evening speech from President Barack Obama came. Osama bin Laden is dead. Suddenly, we forget about the arguing, the bickering between players and owners. Suddenly, we remember all that happened 10 years ago. Sports were there for us then; they must be there for us now. For those fighting, there is still a long, hard road ahead. The threat of terrorism is still there, and we still have friends and family members in harm’s way. Many people reading this right now can think of a loved one serving somewhere in the Middle East. Now, sports must do it again. They must bring us together, fix things and help us move on. Regardless of what the labor or contract arguments are, sports must uphold their end. And this is not only about the leagues continuing to play. It is about the United Service Organization tours, where many who are deployed do not get to watch their favorite teams often, and hope to spend just a few minutes with their favorite coaches and players. It is about the flyovers, the national anthem and the notion that we are all taught when growing up: Never quit. Everyone fights. No one quits. It’s happening on the fields of war, and it must continue to happen on the fields of play. read more

Braxton Millers return lifts Ohio State over Wisconsin

Junior quarterback Braxton Miller (5) drops back in the pocket during a game against Wisconsin Sept. 28 at Ohio Stadium. OSU won, 31-24.Credit: Shelby Lum / Photo editorIn the days leading up to Ohio State’s 31-24 victory over Wisconsin, Buckeye coach Urban Meyer made it clear that quarterbacks junior Braxton Miller and redshirt-senior Kenny Guiton would both see the field offensively in the Big Ten opener.Returning from injury, Miller asserted himself as OSU’s starting quarterback, playing all 68 offensive snaps. He threw for 198 yards and four touchdowns in what was his first game action since spraining the MCL in his left knee against San Diego State Sept. 7.Meyer said he was impressed with Miller’s play, especially going up against a talented Wisconsin defense.“(Miller) played very well. I think … (it) looks (like) he threw 200 yards, four touchdowns, two sacks. (Wisconsin) played very good defense. Didn’t realize how many seniors (there were) on the (Wisconsin) defense. (They’re a) well-coached, hard-playing outfit … I think the team we played is very good,” Meyer said.Coming off the injury, Miller said his knee “felt good,” allowing him to rack up 83 yards on the ground. Initially, it was a bit tight, but things started to improve after a couple of drives.“Just a little bit in the beginning of the game,” Miller said when asked if he was holding back to protect his knee. “I loosened up and you know how things get tight, you loosen up after a while. But the drive before the half, they opened up a lot, plus they came out with the ball again and (we) had to set the tone before we went into the locker room.”Whether Miller would play was a game-time decision against Florida A&M Sept. 21, and he was scratched from the lineup just before kickoff. After an impressive week in practice, it was hard to keep Miller off the field for long, Meyer said.“There was no doubt who was going to be our starter,” Meyer said. “And we gotta keep moving forward and keep everybody locked in on the target.”Being able to get out and run the ball effectively was a boost for Miller and the offense, senior wide receiver Corey “Philly” Brown said.“It was big for his confidence, especially for a quarterback like Braxton. I think that we saw the old Braxton (Saturday) when he was down there running. He felt like he could do it all tonight,” Brown said.Miller’s three scores in the first half were a career-high in a half, for the Buckeye signal caller.Junior wide receiver Devin Smith said Miller’s dedication during practice is what made the difference in his return to the field.“All week he’s just been working, his footwork, his throwing mechanics and you could see it on the field,” Smith said.Getting Miller back into the lineup “felt great,” redshirt-senior Jack Mewhort said. The offensive lineman said he was “happy to have (Miller) back out there.”Guiton, who in Miller’s absence led the Buckeyes to wins against San Diego State, California and Florida A&M, was only on the field for special teams against the Badgers.Meyer said he wanted to get Guiton onto the field after his performance during the past three weeks, but he was unable to find the right moment in the game.“Oh, no not if (Miller’s) healthy. If he was healthy, I’d like to get Kenny in the game. Just in the moment it didn’t happen,” Meyer said.Guiton has thrown for 664 yards and 13 touchdowns this year, but despite being relegated to backup in favor of Miller, he was the one of the first to come out and celebrate with the starter.“He’s been my big brother ever since I got here. We’ve had a connection. We (are) roommates every game,” Miller said. “We talk about things outside of football. So we hang out all the time and (I’m) just happy to see him happy for me to be back on the field with the team.”Next up, the Buckeyes hit the road to take on No. 16 Northwestern in Evanston, Ill., scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m. ESPN’s College GameDay will be at the game, the first time since 1995 that they will be at Northwestern. Barring any major setback, Miller will be the starting quarterback looking to help OSU add to the nation’s longest winning streak.“It’s good. It’s 100 percent. I just wear a knee brace for caution and keep it real tight,” Miller said. read more

first_imgSocial workers said there were concerns that the boy, now aged about eight months, might ingest “harmful alternative medication” either directly or via his mother’s breast milk.Detail of the case has emerged in a ruling published by the judge following a family court hearing in Portsmouth, Hampshire.Judge Black said the family involved could not be identified – but she said Southampton city council had responsibility for the boy and had asked her to make decisions about the boy’s long-term future.Judge Black said the little boy had been temporarily taken from his parents when he was a few days old after social workers and police became concerned about his safety. She said social workers had a number of worries – including concerns that the boy had not been given appropriate medical attention.Judge Black said the boy’s parents had not attended family court hearings for a number of months – and had gone to Portugal. They had complained that their baby had been “kidnapped” by the council “in order to be adopted”.She said the couple had “abandoned” their son and no family members had put themselves forward as carers.”This child has been waiting in the care system almost from his birth … for decisions to be made about his future,” said Judge Black.”The parents have abandoned him in that they have not taken any steps which would enable the local authority or the court to consider recommencing contact let alone rehabilitation.”She added: “The court is satisfied that there is no one who is in a position to meet the needs of the child and there is no relative who has the ability or willingness to meet the child’s needs.”Judge Black said taking children from parents and placing them in the care of councils was a “serious matter”.The judge said such moves should be made only if “nothing else will do”. But she added: “There is no other option in this case.”Judge Black commended social services staff for the “tremendous efforts” they had made to “engage” the boy’s parents. The court is satisfied that there is no one who is in a position to meet the needs of the childJudge Helen Black A baby boy whose father advocates the use of “harmful alternative medication” should be taken into council care, a family court judge has decided. The man had sold Master Mineral Solution (MMS) as a treatment for cancer and autism, social services staff told Judge Helen Black.Staff said MMS was a sodium chlorite solution equivalent to industrial-strength bleach – and they said the Food Standards Agency had warned that it should not be taken. They said the man advocated the use of MMS and his website included “paraphernalia for the administration of such products to babies”.last_img read more

Karen Dunbar confused by row over Ruth Davidson dyke sketch

first_imgScottish Independence Convention   A spokesman for the Scottish Conservatives said: “It doesn’t matter how many ways these so-called comedians and SNP MPs try to wriggle out of this. ’Dyke’ is clearly a word which upsets many – that’s not news to anyone – so quite why that’s not being accepted by these people is a mystery.” Scottish Independence Convention supporters march through GlasgowCredit:PA The comedian Karen Dunbar has said she is “confused” by the row over one of her sketches in which Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader, is described as “Ruth Dykey D”.  The rap sketch was performed at an independence rally in Glasgow at the weekend by the female comedy collective Witsherface.  The Scottish Conservatives condemned the language used and challenged the Nationalists to distance themselves from it.  Annie Wells, a Tory Glasgow MP, who is also gay, said it was “shameful”, while Colin Macfarlane, of the gay rights charity Stonewall Scotland, said calling someone a dyke was homophobic.  The event was attended by senior SNP figures, including Alex Salmond, while Joanna Cherry MP, the SNP home affairs spokesman, tweeted that the performance was “hilariously irreverent satire”. Written by Ms Dunbar, an actress and comedian, it was also performed in March during the Glasgow Comedy Festival.  She said on Tuesday that as a gay woman who had experienced “horrendous homophobia” she felt confused that anyone could “interpret anything in the rap as being homophobic”.  She added: “If my work has offended anyone it was not my intention. My sole purpose with this sketch was to create a comic rap about our current female political leaders. Any accusation that myself or Witsherface is homophobic, is utterly ridiculous.”  A member of the group said: “Politicians, whatever their colour or creed are always fair game when it comes to comedy. ‘Twas ever thus, and should remain so in a healthy society.”  The event market the re-launch of the Scottish Independence Convention on the second anniversary of the 2014 vote in which independence was rejected. British Museum launches search to solve mystery of gold treasure hoard found

If it is less than 300 years old, it must prove to be made substantially of gold and deliberately concealed by its former owner. In 2011, a similar hoard of coins was discovered in a jam jar in a Hackney garden. The house was bombed in the Blitz, with family members being killed. Descendants of the owners were eventually traced to Israel, and granted ownership.Gold and silver hoards have also been reported from the English Civil War, where they had been buried for safety and never dug up again.Ian Richardson, treasure registrar at the British Museum, said he had also come across cases of gold ornaments found inside a Bronze Age axe head, and gold coins in an Iron Age antler. They are deliberately withholding details of the hoard, to encourage would-be claimants to fill in the gaps to prove their link is genuine. The British Museum has confirmed that a cache of gold items was deliberately hidden in an upright piano made by Broadwood & Sons of London in 1906, and sold to a music shop in Essex.Messrs. Beavan & Mothersole in Saffron Walden then sold it on to private owners, with no trace of who played it between 1906 and 1983.Then, it was sold as part of a house clearance after the death of its former owner, with no sign of the hoard coming to light. Its latest owners reported their find to a local Shropshire museum before Christmas, after realising its historical significance. The British Museum is now hunting for information The Silverdale Viking Hoard’, saved for the nation under the terms of the Treasure Act A thorough search of any average home may turn up a few coins hidden under sofa cushions, or jewellery tucked away for safe-keeping and forgotten.Few will reveal a hoard of gold treasure stashed in a piano. But the British Museum has launched a nationwide hunt to solve just such a mystery of hidden treasure, found planted inside an upright piano sometime in the last century.Experts are seeking information about the lost gold, which was found by new owners of the piano as they came to tune it in a stash described as “substantial”.Understood to be coins, they were concealed in the piano within the last 110 years but are believed to date from pre-1900. An inquest has now opened in Shropshire, with coroners urging members of the public to come forward with information about when the treasure was planted and why. The British Museum is now hunting for information Investigation eventually revealed the American coins had been buried by German Jewish refugees, who had later been sent to an internment camp and wanted to protect their treasures. Some of the 52,503 Roman coins by metal detector at Frome, Somerset, unveiled by the British Museum in 2010 under the treasures act The Silverdale Viking Hoard', saved for the nation under the terms of the Treasure Act Police are not involved in the investigation. While it is possible that the gold was stashed deliberately by criminals, who never retrieved it, experts believe it was more likely left by an absent-minded member of the public who died without telling relatives their secret.Peter Reavill, finds liaison officer for Shropshire, said he hoped to reunite the items with the family of the original owner, saying it would make “perfect sense” to send them home. A statement released by the British Museum said: “The finds are highly unusual in nature being substantially made of gold and appear to have been deliberately hidden within the last 110 years.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? How to make the most from selling your home Study reveals ideal

| zzloezgnpkat

first_imgHomes that take 12 days to sell are the most likely to achieve their maximum asking price, research suggests.Homeowners’ campaign body the HomeOwners Alliance looked at the relationship between the length of time that a property sits on the market for and the percentage of the asking price that it achieves.Using data from more than 5,000 estate agency branches across Britain, it found the eventual price paid for a property peaked at 12 days.  Properties which are listed for a number of weeks see their values drop steadilyPaula Higgins, HomeOwners Alliance The HomeOwners Alliance used a tool on its website called estateagent4me, which helps people to find out about local estate agents, for the research.Paula Higgins, chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, said properties sold in fewer than 12 days might not achieve their full value if they were sold too quickly.”Perhaps another buyer may have come along with a better offer if the seller had waited for a few more days,” she said. “At the other end of the scale, properties which are listed for a number of weeks see their values drop steadily, particularly after they have been listed for over a month.” Estate agents selling homes at this point tended to achieve just over the full asking price, at 100.89 per cent typically. Both before and after the 12-day point, the average percentage of the asking price achieved was slightly lower.Based on an average UK property price of £218,000, a 12-day sale could mean the owner achieves additional £1,940 on top of their asking price, the report suggested. The research also suggested that after a property had been on the market for a couple of months, it would achieve around 96 per cent of the asking price on average, and after three months on the market this would fall to around 94 per cent. Boris Johnson has launched an attack on Jeremy Corbyn Credit:AFP Boris Johnson says he would be “deeply ashamed” if the “curiously vested” Jeremy Corbyn defeats Theresa May in the upcoming General Election. In an interview with the Telegraph on Snapchat, the Foreign Secretary attacked Corbyn, who he previously described as a ‘mutton-headed old mugwump’, as a shock poll shows the Tory lead has been cut from 17 to just one point. On the prospect of Corbyn leading Brexit negotiations, he added: “The thing that most alarms me is that we have a big decision to make about how to get Brexit right. He doesn’t seem to have a clue about how he wants to conduct the negotiations or indeed what he really wants.“If he were to get in he would only survive if he were propped up on either side by the Scottish nationalists or the Lib Dems. Both of them jabbering in his ear. They both want to frustrate Brexit.”The Telegraph has joined Snapchat! Stay up-to-date with all the election news using the snapcode below:  Asked to sum up Corbyn in less than 30 words, Johnson quipped he was: “A Chavez-admiring curiously-vested leader of a sleeper cell of crypto-communists who piratically captured the Labour Party.”The former Mayor of London added he would be “deeply ashamed” if Corbyn was elected Prime Minister on June 8.Asked how he would feel, Johnson replied: “Deeply shocked. I will feel deeply ashamed. Because I will feel we have somehow failed to explain the risk and that will be my fault.” Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn Theresa May He added that in his lifetime, “we’ve never had a leader of the Labour Party who is so left wing”.“I think young people genuinely do not remember the 1970s and the 1980s in the way that some of us do. Labour was very left wing then, in the 1970s things went totally off the rails,” he said.  “All the stuff Corbyn is talking about is not new, people think it’s new, this isn’t new. We had this- it was a disaster. Nationalisation- we’ve done all that- it doesn’t work. It’s called left wing socialism.” Theresa May is hoping for election victory Credit:AFP  Or by clicking here from your mobile device.  Johnson also criticised the Labour leader’s admiration for Venezuela’s self-styled socialist revolutionary Hugo Chavez’s politics and mocked Corbyn’s fondness of wearing a vest.He also joked the Labour Party is full of secret communists ready to turn their backs on capitalism should they win the election. Manchester terror bombing could have been prevented review finds

| wkulfctuzkkl

first_imgMI5’s internal investigation concluded that the decision not to reopen an investigation into Abedi in early 2017 was “finely balanced” and “understandable”.Reviewers decided that ”on the clear balance of professional opinion, a successful pre-emption of the gathering plot would have been unlikely”.Mr Anderson’s review three of the six attackers who conducted “were on MI5’s radar”. As well as Abedi, Khurram Butt, one of the London Bridge attackers, was the subject of active investigation, while Khalid Massood, the Westminister Bridge attacker, was also a former subject of interest. Butt was the “principal subject” of an MI5 investigation called Operation Hawthorn “opened in mid-2015 following information suggesting that he aspired to conduct an attack on the UK”.Under Hawthorn, he was given a priority ranking “signifying high extremist activity linked to attack planning”.He was subject to extensive surveillance, but as time passed, his focus was judged to have moved away from attacking the UK and towards travelling overseas to fight for Islamic State group. It was also disclosed that Khalid Masood, the Westminster attacker, had watched suicide attack videos on YouTube in the days before he drove at pedestrians and stabbed to death a policeman during an 82 second rampage. It found the 22-year-old who was born in Manchester to parents who had fled Libya had first become an MI5 “subject of interest” in 2014, but it transpired he had been mistaken for someone else and his case was closed. It was reopened the following year on mistaken intelligence that he had contacted an Islamic State figure in Libya. But though his case remained closed from that point, “Salman Abedi continued to be referenced from time to time in intelligence gathered for other purposes.”In two separate instances in the run up to the attack, intelligence was received that was “assessed at the time to relate not to terrorism, but to possible non-nefarious activity or to criminality”.An automated trawl of suspects data designed to spot closed cases that could need re-examining “identified Salman Abedi as one of a small number of individuals, out of a total of more than 20,000 closed subjects of interest, who merited further examination”.“A meeting (arranged before the attack) was due to take place on May 31: Salman Abedi’s case would have been considered, together with the others identified. The attack intervened on May 22.”Mr Anderson said: “With the benefit of hindsight, intelligence was misinterpreted in early 2017.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily  Front Page newsletter and new  audio briefings. Between March and June, London and Manchester saw four attacks killing a total of 36 people and wounding another 200. MI5 had planned to discuss the threat posed by the Manchester suicide bomber just nine days after he launched his attack, an official report has revealed. The review by David Anderson QC found the bombing which killed 22 people could have been averted “had the cards fallen differently.”Salman Abedi had been highlighted for discussion at an MI5 meeting due to take place on May 31, but he detonated his explosives at the Manchester Arena nine days earlier.Internal reviews into the police and MI5’s handling of the four terrorist attacks to strike Britain this year said MI5 had on two separate occasions received intelligence on Abedi “whose significance was not fully appreciated at the time”.The report by David Anderson QC, a former terrorism law reviewer asked by the Home Secretary to audit internal MI5 and police reviews, said: “In retrospect, the intelligence can be seen to have been highly relevant to the planned attack.”His 61-page report concluded it was “conceivable that the Manchester attack in particular might have been averted had the cards fallen differently”.Rudd: Nine plots foiled since Westminster attack Mr Anderson said: “The excellent recent record of MI5 and police in defending the UK from terrorist attack came to a brutal end this year at Westminster, Manchester Arena, London Bridge and Finsbury Park.”He said: “After four such incidents over a short period, unsparing reflection was required.”British spies have foiled nine terror attacks in the past 12 months, Andrew Parker, the head of MI5, told the Cabinet on Tuesday morning.Mr Parker disclosed the figures as part of a briefing on the current terrorist threat facing the UK.last_img read more

The Essex Police domestic abuse campaign  “Our message in this campaign isn’t ‘stay in any relationship no matter how abusive’.”It’s ‘if something is happening in your relationship even if you’ve been with someone for decades there is help you can get’.” The campaign material we have shared this week from the Southend Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board does not advocate staying in an abusive relationship. It offers people support to make their own choices about the action they take, including when they’re not ready to leave.— Essex Police (@EssexPoliceUK) December 15, 2017 The Essex Police domestic abuse campaignCredit:center_img The campaign was launched with the Southend, Essex and Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board. Its chairman, Dick Madden, said: “The campaign was developed directly with domestic abuse specialists, domestic abuse refuges, partners and most importantly, survivors of abuse.”The message is clear – domestic abuse is never acceptable.”He said the campaign includes seven scenarios, based on real life experiences, which aim to help victims reach out to support. He said they “thought very carefully” about including Sheila’s story.”Not all domestic abuse cases are the same, and not all victims will want to leave or consider reporting to the police,” said Mr Madden.”Through this particular scenario, we are aiming to reach out to this audience and give them information about the support available, whatever their circumstances.”We want to make sure victims know where to turn to for support.” He noted there were supportive comments on the post as well as criticism.”We think it is positive that the campaign has sparked a debate on a very important issue,” he said. A police force has been criticised after a social media post appeared to suggest domestic abuse victims could stay with their partners.Essex Police posted a case study on Facebook about “Sheila”, a 65-year-old woman in an abusive relationship. “She knew that the abuse in her relationship was wrong but also knew that she wouldn’t leave,” it said.”With help and support from specialist organisations and agencies, Sheila and her husband stayed together, but safely.”The post is part of the 55+ Safety Net campaign, which aims to help older victims of domestic abuse. However, it came in for criticism and Essex Police apologised for the “clumsy language” of the post. One Facebook user wrote “first time I’ve heard people being helped to stay in an abusive relationship”, another said “such a load of rubbish, if it is abusive there is only one answer, get out now”.An Essex Police spokesman said: “We have used clumsy language in a Facebook post that has clearly caused offence and we are sorry for that. “However the stories featured in the campaign are real stories. We heard from victims who wanted help to leave relationships and we heard from victims who would never have called police but have been able to have counselling, family therapy and other interventions that have made them feel safelast_img read more

Birds Eye reveal new Italian born Captain

first_imgMr Acerbi is said to have gone through a rigorous audition process before being awarded with the coveted role. His affinity for water sports including sailing and canoeing, equipped him with the necessary seafaring qualities, Birdseye bosses said. A Birds Eye spokesman said: “With almost 35 years’ experience in front of the camera, Riccardo nabbed the role following a rigorous audition process at which he impressed Birdseye with his genuine approach to portraying the Captain and love of the sea.”He is not the first young Captain to grace our screens.Thomas Pescod took on the role in 1998 at the age of just 31. The move was a flop however and the character was dropped from adverts.  Captain Birds Eye The new Captain will replace Mitch Commins Captain Birds Eye with fish fingers Unlike his predecessor, the 56-year-old also doesn’t suffer from seasickness. With his shaggy white beard, sailor’s hat and a twinkle in his eye Captain Birdseye is instantly recognisable as the kindly face of fish fingers. But now the salty sea dog has been given a face lift and replaced with a younger – and some customers have noted remarkably attractive – model. As part of an £8 million advertising campaign Italian born actor Riccardo Acerbi, 56, is set to replace South African Mitch Commins, 68, who took the role less than two years ago.The new Captain will make his television debut at 6.45pm tonight [Monday] on Channel 4. The ad is expected to see Captain Birdseye jumping into the sea with his grandchildren, before tucking into a plate of fish fingers. It has been claimed that the new face of the Captain comes as the company aims to make the character more contemporary.Other adjectives have been used on social media.  Ok Magazine tweeted: “OMG, the new hunky Captain Birdseye will make you think differently about Fish Fingers.” The new advert will launch on Monday evening Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Catholic bishop says churches should stay open like the Church of England

| qdwskqdhsxuf

first_imgThe Church of England recommends that its churches keep their doors open outside service times as best practice. It says churches are actually more likely to be attacked when they are locked, “possibly as criminals feel they are less likely to be disturbed in a closed church than one where anyone could appear at any time”. Ecclesiastical, the largest insurer to the Church of England, also suggests that churches keep their doors open. Its advice says that “where appropriate that churches are kept open because of the positive effect that has on security”, and adds that keeping a church open during the day with proper risk assessment would not increase insurance premiums.  A spokesman for the Catholic bishops in England and Wales said there was no country-wide policy about keeping church doors open, but the decision was down to each individual bishop. It is not known which diocese the Bishop of Portsmouth was visiting. In the 2013 apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis said: “The Church is called to be the house of the Father, with doors always wide open. “One concrete sign of such openness is that our church doors should always be open, so that if someone, moved by the Spirit, comes there looking for God, he or she will not find a closed door.”In 2015 he said at a general audience in St Peter’s Square that churches should make people feel welcome by keeping doors open. A spokeswoman for the Catholic National Mutual Limited, the main insurer for Catholic dioceses in the UK, said: “Churches are places of worship and sanctuary, and it is important that they remain open and accessible to all. “Accordingly, CNM Ltd does not interfere with or influence the opening hours of churches, nor does this have any impact on insurance premiums.”A spokeswoman for the Diocese of Westminster, another Catholic diocese, said that many of its churches in London had been forced to lock their doors following vandalism.  Catholic churches should follow the Church of England to keep their doors open outside of services, the bishop of Portsmouth has said. Philip Egan complained that on a recent visit outside his diocese he had been unable to visit any churches because they had all been shut. In a Tweet posted on Sunday he said: “Why oh why?! Just spent a few days outside the Diocese but every Catholic church I tried to visit was locked. “One even had the utter hypocrisy to display a poster ‘From Maintenance to Mission’! Why is this, when every Anglican Church is welcomely open?” Why oh why?! Just spent a few days outside the Diocese but every Catholic church I tried to visit was locked. One even had the utter hypocrisy to display a poster ‘From Maintenance to Mission’! Why is this, when every Anglican Church is welcomely open?— Bishop Philip Egan (@BishopEgan) January 14, 2018center_img She added that protecting the sacrament was a particular concern. Qatar World Cup stadium death plunge worker had potentially lethal equipment

| wkulfctuzkkl

first_imgA construction worker’s family has called for justice after he fell from a Qatar 2022 World Cup football stadium building site while using “potentially lethal equipment”.Zachary Cox, who was born in Johannesburg but later lived in Hove and London, plummeted nearly 40 metres when a faulty hoist he was using to put a suspended walkway in place broke at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha on January 19, last year. The 40-year-old’s safety harness also snapped under the weight and he fell head first, sustaining brain injuries and a broken neck.He was pronounced dead in hospital just before 3.20pm, Brighton and Hove Coroner’s Court heard on Tuesday.Coroner Veronica Hamilton-Deeley found he died from multiple injuries after a fall from height after new work practices, which she branded “inherently unsafe”, were introduced. Construction work in 2015 on Khalifa International Stadium ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar This led to a shortage of hoists so more were supplied by subcontractor Eversendai but Mrs Hamilton-Deeley said these were in a poor state of care and not fit for purpose.Safety certificates were not presented before use but they were still marked as safe. After Mr Cox’s death it emerged these were five months out of date. Mrs Hamilton-Deeley said if Mr Cox had followed the same back-up plan the accident would not have happened. The inquest heard he was experienced but not to the most senior level but had been made supervisor to other inexperienced team members. She said this was “unfair” on Mr Cox and “inappropriate” for site managers to group his team this way, adding: “The extra burden of responsibility must have weighed on him significantly and possibly led to him underestimating that he now needed to rely on substandard equipment.”I think his mind was on too many other things and what happened was probably unthinkable.” “(The new system) was chaotic, unprofessional, unthinking and downright dangerous.”Mr Cox’s sisters-in-law Ella Joseph and Hazel Mayes told how they had been fighting for answers from officials ever since his death. In a statement after the inquest they called for an independent inquiry and for the Foreign Office to step in, adding: “We demand reassurance that those responsible for making the decisions that ultimately led to Zac’s death will be held to account and justice will be served. She also criticised the lack of documentation on the change in work practices and that staff were not properly notified. She said there was no evidence of a risk assessment being carried out but if there was one, it had been “deeply flawed”.The inquest heard friend and colleague Jon Johnson, who was about 20 metres from Mr Cox when he died, first learned of the change to the plan when he was 40 metres in the air.He was working on a separate team and told how he did not trust the “rubbish equipment” so attached straps as a back-up.Mr Johnson, who said most of the workers were in the country on visitor visas, told the inquest: “I heard a large bang. There was smoke, dust and rust coming out of (the hoist). I knew instantly something terrible was about to happen. The rope snapped. The catwalk fell away from under him. There was nothing to stop him from falling.”center_img “We want to know lessons will be learnt, so other families won’t suffer under similar circumstances.”Zac was a truly special person, with a huge heart and gentle nature. We all miss him desperately.”Colleague Graham Vance, from South Africa, was initially arrested over Mr Cox’s death and kept in Qatar for 10 months but has since been cleared of any wrongdoing.Mr Cox was one of five teams, subcontracted by company Alnix, tasked with fitting the catwalks, used to access lighting, cameras and sound equipment, with winches before positioning them with hoists and fixing them in place. But after the 2016 Christmas break, the staff returned to be told they now needed to lift the walkways with cranes and temporarily hold them in place with hoists until they could be securely fixed later on. Marian Keyes accuses book prize of sexism after never being shortlisted in

The Wodehouse Prize has been running since 2000, with the winner receiving a jeroboam of Bollinger and a Gloucestershire Old Spot pig. The judging panel is dominated by men each year, and in many years has had no female judges at all. The three women writers who have won the prize are Helen Fielding for Bridget Jones’s Baby: The Diaries (2017), Hannah Rothschild for The Improbability of Love (2016, shared with Paul Murray for The Mark and the Void) and Marina Lewycka for A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian (2005).Asked why most of the prize’s winners have been men, Keyes replied: “Because they’re men. Because male voices are automatically given extra weight. I mean, anything that’s ever been said or done by a woman just matters less.”There is both cause and effect there. Power and money are lovely, and those who have it want to hold onto it. One way of keeping those who don’t have it from having it is to mock them and mock the things they love. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.”Things that women love are just automatically dismissed as frivolous nonsense. Football could be considered as frivolous nonsense but it’s treated as hard news in the newspapers. Marian Keyes has accused a leading comic fiction prize of sexism after failing to be shortlisted, claiming women writers are not considered funny and asking: “What else do I have to do to qualify?”The best-selling author, whose books have sold in their millions, said she had a bone to pick with the judges of the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize. The prize was cancelled this year after the organisers concluded that they had not read anything sufficiently amusing. In the past 18 years there have only been three female winners. Keyes said: “The one thing I have a grudge about is the Wodehouse Prize for comic writing.”I have never been shortlisted. Say what you like about me, my books are funny, they are comic. What else do I have to do to qualify?” However, it appears that Keyes’ own publishers did not submit her most recent novel, the Break, for consideration. The Irish author was speaking at the Hay Festival in a discussion recorded for the BBC’s Talking Books programme. The festival director, Peter Florence, is one of the prize judges and said Keyes’ novels had not been submitted for the past two years. He insisted that the judges “do not play the representation game” and the funniest book wins regardless of the author’s gender. Tanken yew 😊 https://t.co/Ica7zuSrrP— Marian ‘Demonically Possessed’ Keyes (@MarianKeyes) June 3, 2018 “So I think by giving the men the prizes, it just reinforces that the men are more important.”She added: “I love many men but that doesn’t mean that I don’t see the sexist imbalance.”This year’s prize was cancelled after the judges concluded that “despite the submitted books producing many a wry smile amongst the panel during the judging process, we did not feel that any of the books we read this year incited the level of unanimous laughter we have come to expect. We look forward to awarding a larger rollover prize next year to a hilariously funny book.”Keyes has sold 33 million copies, beginning with Watermelon in 1995 and most recently The Break, published in September last year. The Irish writer said: “I don’t think many men read my books, but it’s a fact that men will only read books written by men whereas women will read books written by men and women.” Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp?
